8. Moonrise Kingdom
Wes Anderson’s glorious and highly anticipated return did not disappoint this year, and its first trailer was an excellent start to the year when it was release back in January.
Like Now You See Me, it has a tremendously impressive cast of young and old alike, with newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward giving brilliant performances alongside the likes of Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, and Frances McDormand.
The exchange of letters between the young romantics after the Focus Features logo is wonderful, especially with Anderson’s close-ups on the handwritten letters themselves. And Murray’s response to McDormand’s question at the 1-minute mark is genius, and feels so much like Anderson.
Then comes the epic theme from Benjamin Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, which runs through the movie itself, and is just the perfect way to close the trailer, with a great little shot of young Suzy’s cat poking its head out of the basket as we see Anderson’s and co-writer Roman Coppola’s names credited for the script.
