5. The Leftovers

The latest show from Damon Lindelof looks like it could be just as compelling as Lost, with the focus on a wide range of characters in a small suburban community who have to come to terms with the disappearance of their friends and family after an event takes place which is eerily similar to the Biblical rapture.

With a very impressive cast which includes Justin Theroux, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler, and Ann Dowd, The Leftovers easily has one of the most star-studded ensembles on television right now. Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) directed the pilot, and the reviews have been favourable so far, praising the new series for tackling topical themes like religion and grief.

The series is actually based on the novel by Tom Perotta and with HBO (the same US cable network responsible for True Detective and The Sopranos) backing it, this could be something very special indeed.
