5. Smaug

Smaug

We first caught a glimpse of Smaug at the end of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. That was just an eye though, and the full reveal in the appropriately titled Desolation of Smaug resulted in a jaw dropping moment.

The dragon was incredibly detailed – once again, thanks to Weta – and brought to life thanks Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch. However, he did a lot more than just provide Smaug’s voice!

Jackson actually got the actor to do a motion capture performance too, and while you might not think that would be necessary for a dragon, the proof is in the pudding as the final product obviously ended up looking like nothing else we had seen before. They even utilised Cumberbatch’s facial expressions for extra detail. See!
