7. King Kong

King Kong

With The Lord of the Rings Trilogy complete, Peter Jackson set his sights on retelling this classic tale in 2005. The filmmaker once again enlisted Andy Serkis on motion capture duties to ensure that his King Kong would look as realistic as possible, and Weta’s stunning work provided us with a beast that Kong: Skull Island will struggle to top two years from now and over a decade since this movie was released.

Seeing him engage in battles with a Tyrannosaurus-Rex was awe inspiring, but action scenes aside, it was what Serkis and the special effects team brought to King Kong in terms of emotions which really makes him special. Like Gollum before him, King Kong once again established a new benchmark for these types of characters.
