Taking teddy bears as the pinnacle of CGI anthropomorphic excellence last year’s release of Ted 2 showed that the foul mouthed teddy bear now looks even more realistic than he did when the first movie was released.

That got us thinking about both Ted and some other great fully animated characters who it’s hard to believe aren’t real. The Lord of the Rings changed everything when we met Gollum, and since then, studios have continued to develop technology to the point where motion capture creations are indistinguishable from the humans they’re sharing the screen with. Not all of them use that of course, but the truly great ones do.

Still, you’ll find a mixture of both here. These are the best of the best, with animated characters from a variety of different movies.

10. Optimus Prime

Optimus Prime

Regardless of how you feel about Michael Bay’s Transformers movies, there’s no denying that seeing the Autobots and Decepticons brought to life on the big screen is truly incredible.

Some criticise the fact that it’s hard to keep track of who is who when they head into battle, and while that’s a fair point to some extent, they ultimately look no less impressive. Take Optimus Prime for example. Watching his transformation in any one of the four movies released so far is a sight to behold, as the blocky toys and cartoon versions of the past are replaced with a super realistic Optimus who’s every part can be tracked from big rig to walking, talking robot.

Whatever other issues the Transformers movies suffer from, special effects isn’t one of them…

This is not from the film, but as G1 fans we love it.
