1. The Age of Apocalypse
When it comes to a specific arc that X-Men: Apocalypse should be based on, Bryan Singer need look no further than “Legion Quest”.
It is this story which kicks off the Age of Apocalypse timeline as it features a mutant known as Legion – who could arguably be replaced by anyone – travelling back in time to kill Magneto. However, when Professor X gets caught in the crossfire as he tries to protect his then friend, a new timeline is created (it’s worth noting that this is the same timeline that Bishop is from; a character who WILL be featured in X-Men: Days of Future Past).
As a result of Xavier’s sacrifice, Magneto comes to believe in his late friend’s dream of a peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants. Apocalypse takes advantage of this by choosing this as the time to strike, leading to an all-out war between him and Magneto’s team of X-Men.
