4) The Wedding Singer – The Airborne Intervention of Billy Idol
Here’s one plucked from the glory days of Adam Sandler and is here primarily because of the on-screen chemistry between the actor and Drew Barrymore. Producers have been keen to mine this rich source and it has been used a number of times over the years but none are as endearing as their time together as The Waitress and The Wedding Singer.
The neon dazzle of nostalgia gives their 1998 film a fun sheen but it is the sad love song of Robbie an Julia which gives the film its heart.
The scene up for your consideration lies towards the end of the film on the aeroplane and is as heart warming as it is unlikely. Lovelorn Julia (soon to be Julia Guila) is on a plane headed for Vegas with her oafish fiancée and it seems like a sad end for her character. Why, if only Robbie was on the plane too to stop her from making a huge mistake.
Enter Billy Idol*. Spurred on by the bleach blonde rocker Robbie serenades Julia (suddenly not so likely to be Julia Gulia) with a simple love song romantic enough to knock the cockscrew right out of that perm. Sweet, simple and what’s most important is that you believe it completely.
