6) Forrest Gump: “Life is Like a Box of Chocolates”… “I Ate Some”
Forrest Gump is a little bit of a Marmite film. We know people who love it and think it’s one of the best films ever made (Dave!) and others who think it’s very much less so (Jon!). But One thing you cannot deny is the fascinating love story between Forrest and his long term friend and eventual bride Jenny (Robin Wright).
The entire movie is narrated by Forrest (Tom Hanks) from a bus stop while on his way to see Jenny for the first time in years only to discover that he has a son named Forrest (Hayley Joel Osment) from way back when. At the opening of that scene, he offers Jenny some chocolates exclaiming “I ate some” before passing the box over to her. That line alone is simply brilliant as it carries on from the line his mother has spoken to him throughout the movies “Life is like a box of chocolates Forrest, you never know what you’re gonna get”.
I love how that line has been carried through to the moment when Forrest meets Jenny for the first time in years, finds out he has a son and the entire scene opens with that box of chocolates that we’ve heard so much about. From there Forrest and Jenny get married and then you’ll find yet another scene which will make you cry profusely but if you’ve never seen it, we’ll leave it there!
