Willow Creek (Dir: Bobcat Goldthwait)
Another FrightFest 2013 entry also coming out this May – Willow Creek is a found-footage Bigfoot movie with equal parts laughs and scares.
Goldthwait (Zed from Police Academy, latterly director of God Bless America and World’s Greatest Dad) bestows a lot of the weight of the film on his two leads. Both likeable and funny, their zinging conversations allow real laughs to be had. Halfway through however, the mood all changes.
Tense and taut, when the couple arrive in the woods, all bets are off. The film’s marquee moment – a 15 minute, no cuts shot – really ramps up the terror. You’ll be flinching and squirming at every twig snapping.
Every bit as terrifying as The Blair Witch Project but with great comedic performances, Willow Creek sets itself apart as a genre-bending romp that’ll have you believing.
