Well, Universal’s plans for a shared universe for their monster movie properties is actually beginning to look rather good. Earlier today, we told you about them wanting Angelina Jolie for The Bride of Frankenstein, but they’re now in talks with Tom Cruise for The Mummy!

With Dracula Untold proving to be a bit of a flop, it’s thought that The Mummy will be responsible for launching the world with is being overseen by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan. Between Fast & Furious and Jurassic World, 2015 has been an amazing year for Universal Pictures, but they’re now looking to add a whole series of franchises to their slate.

Kurtzman is on board to direct The Mummy, while the script was written by Jon Spaihts.

There’s no word on who Cruise will be playing, but Variety reveals that he, “will play a major part in helping develop this new franchise” and that “Cruise’s name is expected to play a large part in not only the “Mummy” franchise, but also in the monster universe, as it’s planned that characters will have roles in other monster movies leading up to an ‘Avengers’-style tie-in film.” It’s been previously confirmed that The Mummy will be set in the present.

Tom Cruise is thought to be something of a fan of these movies, and rumour has it that he passed on The Overlook Hotel for this project, so it may now be worth getting excited…
