When last we saw our titular detective he was reeling from the murder of Charles Augustus Magnussen, and took a turn for the worse whilst unraveling the machinations of Moriarty from beyond the grave.
The recent Christmas special gave Messrs. Moffat, Gattis, Cumberbatch and Freeman the chance to play a more traditional version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous creation, but for the new season we’re back on familiar ground.
Three episodes await us early next year, with the series kicking off with the wonderfully-talented Rachel Talalay behind the camera. The first look trailer shows off a little of what to expect, and we’re a far cry from the wink-wink, chummy ‘who’s a naughty murderer, then?’ camaraderie of the early shows.
One piece of sterling casting is Toby Jones, who joins the series as a villainous role. Despite the dark tone of the trailer this is one show we can’t wait to brighten up our cold Winter nights next year.
