Based on Derf Backderf’s acclaimed 2012 graphic novel of the same name, and a Black Listed script from writer/director Marc Meyers, My Friend Dahmer explores the beginnings of one of the most infamous serial killers in US history. Today we have an exclusive look at the new trailer and poster for the film.
Former Disney kid Ross Lynch takes the leading role as an awkward teen, an outcast in his small town and preyed upon at high school. As the world around him becomes more immovable in its condemnation of the weird and unusual, a strange bond forms between Dahmer and a group of boys at the school. As time goes on, and his celebrated antics become less palatable to the boys and a growing internal darkness spreads. Slowly the man he is destined to become begins to emerge.
The film looks to take a fresh approach to the serial killer biopic, something necessary when we are so familiar with the final chapter of this terrible story.
My Friend Dahmer arrives in UK and Irish Cinemas and on Digital from the 1st of June. Here’s the trailer,
My Friend Dahmer Synopsis
Jeffrey Dahmer murdered 17 men and boys in the Midwest United States between 1978 and 1991 before being captured and incarcerated. He would become one of America’s most infamous serial killers. This is the story before that story. Jeff Dahmer (Disney Channel’s Ross Lynch) is an awkward teenager struggling to make it through high school with a family life in ruins. He collects roadkill, fixates on a neighborhood jogger (Vincent Kartheiser, “Mad Men”), and copes with his unstable mother (Anne Heche) and well-intentioned father (Dallas Roberts).
He begins to act out at school, and his goofball antics win over a group of band-nerds who form The Dahmer Fan Club, headed by Derf Backderf (Alex Wolff, “Patriots Day”). But this camaraderie can’t mask his growing depravity. Approaching graduation, Jeff spirals further out of control, inching ever closer to madness. Marc Meyers’s MY FRIEND DAHMER is the haunting, sad, funny, true story of Jeffrey Dahmer in high school.
