‘Doctor Who’ and ‘The Crown’ actor, Matt Smith has joined Edgar Wright’s next offering ‘Last Night in Soho’ in which he joins the already cast, Anya Taylor-Joy.
Also joining the cast is ‘Leave No Trace’ breakthrough actress Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie.
The project is dubbed a psychological horror-thriller set in London’s Soho district, split between two time periods, the 1960s and 2010s. Smith will play Taylor-Joy’s boss in the 60s scenes, McKenzie a fashion student in the modern-day scenes. Taylor-Joy will be playing the lead in what will be the Cornetto trilogy and ‘Baby Driver’ director’s next project. ‘Don’t Look Now’ and ‘Repulsion’ will have heavily influenced the story.
Wright has previously commented on why he wanted to set his next project in a place he has spent a lot of his time. He also confirmed that a draft was in place for the ‘Baby Driver’ sequel.
“I realised I had never made a film about central London – specifically Soho, somewhere I’ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years. With Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead, you make movies about places you’ve lived in. This movie is about the London I’ve existed in.”
“A first draft of ‘Baby Driver 2’ exists, it introduces a whole swathe of new characters following the original’s high body-count, and takes the story further”
After appearing in Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ as Prince Phillip, Smith has become a major hot property. His upcoming projects include ‘Mapplethorpe’ and ‘His House’. He has recently wrapped filming on ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ and recently signed on the dotted line to star in Sony’s ‘Morbius’.
McKenzie’s upcoming projects include historical epic ‘The King’and serial killer drama ‘Lost Girls’. She has also just finished up filming on Taiki Waititi’s ‘Jojo Rabbit’ and Justin Kurzel‘s crime drama ‘The True History of the Kelly Gang’.
