Lost Ladies

Given the sheer wealth of films to be released in India every year, to be selected as the production to be put forward for the Academy Awards, is no mean feat. This year, that film is Lost Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao. We had the pleasure of speaking to the director, and two leading stars, earlier this year.

But now, with the film very much on the campaign trail, it meant that huge superstar actor – and producer – Aamir Khan was in town, and we were thrilled to be awarded the chance to speak to him, alongside the esteemed businesswoman, and fellow producer Jyoti Deshpande.

We discuss the merits of the film and the great reception it has received around the world. They also speak about the balance of entertainment and meaningful art, and we look back the beginnings of their careers, and where this passion for cinema first begun.

Synopsis

Set in rural India, “Lost Ladies” is a comedy of errors, following the story of two women whose lives are turned upside down after a mix-up on a train right after their weddings, which results in groom Deepak taking the wrong bride Jaya home, instead of his bride Phool. What ensues is a series of misadventures where the two brides encounter oddball characters with unexpected consequences. The journey home is one of immense discovery: about themselves, womanhood and life itself.
