Director John Hamburg has plenty of experience in the generation gap comedy genre. He had a hand in the various Meet the Parents/Fockers trilogy and he brings this to bear on his latest film Why Him? starring Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston and newly minted Alien: Covenant cast member James Franco.

Telling the oft-told Father of the Bride tale with Franco as an internet billionaire whose hedonistic, free-spirited (and very touchy-feely) personality jars with the buttoned-up plaid exterior of his future Father-in-law, played here by Cranston.

There’s a great deal of talent involved here, and though 2016 has not seen many laugh out loud feature length comedies the pairing of Franco and Cranston should be enough to tickle our ribs while the excess on screen unfolds.

James Kleinmann sat down with the director to talk about his new film, which also stars Megan Mullally, Zoey Deutch and Keegan-Michael Key. We spoke to those cast members, as well as to Bryan Cranston and James Franco, and you can find those interviews here.

Why Him Movie Synopsis?

Over the holidays, Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The straight-laced Ned thinks Laird, who has absolutely no filter, is a wildly inappropriate match for his daughter. The one-sided rivalry—and Ned’s panic level—escalate when he finds himself increasingly out of step in the glamorous high-tech hub, and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.
