Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch will play the titular character in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, while Tilda Swinton is rumoured to be in the running for the role on The Ancient One (a departure from the comics).

It was revealed some time ago that Chiwetel Ejiofor was in the running for a key role, and now Deadline reports that the 12 Years A Slave actor is set to play the villainous Baron Mordo. In the comics, he was also trained by The Ancient One, but turned on both him and Doctor Strange to align himself with Dormammu.

How much of that origin story will find its way into this movie remains to be seen, especially as the site mentions that he won’t be a full on villain, and will in fact be “an amalgamation of characters culled from Doctor Strange‘s mythology”. What that means remains to be seen, but this is an exciting bit of casting!

Written by Jon Spaihts and directed by Scott Derrickson, Doctor Strange follows the story of the brilliant and arrogant neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who learns after a horrific car accident that his hands don’t hold the key to his powers. Instead, he discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.
