Captain-Phillips-PosterPaul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips has been abuzz with Oscar talk for months, with Tom Hanks leading the director’s first film since Green Zone.

Last week, the action-thriller, based on a true story, was announced as the Opening Night Film for the BFI London Film Festival, cementing its status as a strong awards contender in the coming months. And now Sony have launched the new trailer, following the first trailer that arrived back in the spring.

Columbia Pictures’ action-thriller Captain Phillips stars two-time Oscar® winner Tom Hanks in the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

The film is directed by Oscar® nominee Paul Greengrass, from a screenplay by Billy Ray and based upon the book, A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty. The film is produced by Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, and Michael De Luca.

Starring alongside Hanks will be Catherine Keener, Max Martini, Barkhad Abdi, Faysal Ahmed, Mahat M. Ali, Michael Chernus, and David Warshofsky.

Greengrass directs from a script penned by Billy Ray, who is adapting the book, A Captain’s Duty, by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty.

Captain Phillips will be released in the US on October 11th, and will follow a week later with an 18th October UK release date.
