Next year, Star Trek will return to the small screen. The movie franchise is still going strong of course (Star Trek Beyond is released next month and looks like a lot of fun), but it’s hard not to be excited about getting to explore this world on a weekly basis again come 2017.

Regardless of whether or not you’re a Trekkie, the fact that Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller is in charge of the series should make it worth your time, and he’s revealed some new details about what he has in store for us. For starters, it will run for thirteen episodes, and production begins this September. However, they’re already well into the writing stages.

“We’ve got the arc of the first season entirely written, or arced out, and we’ve got the first six episodes entirely broken,” he confirmed during a recent interview with Collider.

As for where they are in terms of casting for Star Trek, he added: “I’ve met with a few actors, and it’s an interesting process. There’s a few people that we like and we want to carry on what Star Trek does best, which is being progressive. So it’s fascinating to look at all of these roles through a colorblind prism and a gender-blind prism, so that’s exciting.”

It sounds like this will be a very diverse take on Star Trek then, and with Fuller adding that more details should be revealed during Comic-Con, we’ll hopefully learn more soon…
