Its the news all die-hard fans of the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise has been waiting for. Dan Ackroyd has confirmed Bill Murray will be returning to the role of Dr. Peter Venkman for the newest instalment.

The news now completes the line-up of the original cast members return after both Akroyd and Ernie Hudson were both confirmed back in September.

Sigourney Weaver who played Dana Barrett and Annie Potts who played Janine Melnitz have already been confirmed to reprise their roles from the original 2 films but there is still no word on Bill Murrey returning. Also, previously announced new cast member, Paul Rudd’s character details have been made public. Rudd will play a seismologist investigating some strange earthquakes while also teaching summer school. Other new cast members include Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace.

Reitman will be following in his Father’s footsteps, Ivan, who directed the first two films in the franchise back in 1984 and 1989. The next instalment is said to be a continuation of the 1984 film and in no way connected to its all-female 2016 reboot.

The story is rumoured to be an extension of the original ‘Ghostbusters’ and focus on a single mom and her family, with Coon playing the mom and Wolfhard playing her son.

Sony has always been big fans of the franchise and was looking for ways to bring the original back to life. The even went covert in closing a deal with Reitman with a fake title of Rust City just to keep the news out of the press until the time was right.

Reitman has co-written a screenplay with Gil Kenan. The film shot this summer has Sony planning to release the latest sequel in summer 2020.
