The Wire
Many TV shows and movies claim to talk the language of the streets but few, if any, did it with as much conviction as The Wire, and that is all down to its creator: former police reporter David Simon who was uniquely positioned to inject an unusually realistic tone. With its jargon-heavy language, robust range of accents and sprawling cast of characters it was often a tough watch, but one that inexorably drew viewers into a riveting examination of the relationship between the city’s police force and wider institutions such as the drug trade. Showcasing a remarkably authentic Baltimore accent, Brit Dominic West shot to fame as tough detective Jimmy McNulty as did Idris Elba as drug kingpin Stringer Bell.
