The X Files

X-Files

Riding a wave of early 90s conspiracy theories and debates about alien activity on Earth, Chris Carter’s landmark series expertly mixed pulpy thrills with rare philosophical intelligence, immediately establishing itself as must-watch TV. Hinging on the slow-burn chemistry between its two central FBI agents, believer Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and skeptic Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), it was a series that steadily built intrigue and kept viewers hooked – at least until its peak around season 6, after which it steadily started to decline. Nevertheless there’s no denying how fiendishly addictive The X Files was at its height, whether it was the ongoing myth-arc episodes or the oft-terrifying, standalone ‘monster of the weeks’. Yes, this year’s 6-episode run was a disaster but we can park that – the originals are what count.
