4. The Passion Of The Christ

Passion

It could be argued that this was the beginning of the end for Mel Gibson’s career, as The Passion of Christ is easily one of the most controversial movies in recent memory. It very much split opinion however – something which is perhaps inevitable when it comes to religion – with a good example of that being the amount of violence.

Though some argued that it was necessary in order to portray Jesus’ sacrifice, others likened it to a snuff movie. The fact that Gibson’s passion project faced accusations of antisemitism (due to Jewish caricatures were blamed for the death of Jesus with little subtlety) caused quite a stir as well, and the director did little to help the matter with a drunken anti-Jewish rant shortly after The Passion’s release.
