8. Borat

Borat

Is it fair to call Borat controversial? It’s arguably Sasha Baron Cohen’s best movie, and pretty damn funny to boot despite some of the offensive material contained within (though many who criticised some of the anti-semitic scenes seemingly didn’t realise that Cohen himself is Jewish and was just playing on people’s stereotypes).

Regardless, it was the fallout from this one which would end up stirring a hornet’s nest. Some claimed that Borat had cost them their jobs, with others furious at being misled and made a fool of on camera for the world to see. A number of Cohen’s targets tried and failed to sue, but perhaps most upset were the Kazak government who dismissed the movie as “a concoction of bad taste and ill manners.” Ouch!
