6: Oliver! Wins Best Picture

Oliver-Musical

It would seem the Academy have somewhat of a love affair with musicals and this has never been proven stronger than when Oliver! took home Best Picture back in 1968. No disrespect to Oliver, in fact I think it is a perfectly enjoyable and very well made film, but when you consider that it was released the same year as 2001 A Space Oddity, which wasn’t even nominated, you understand where the problem comes in.

Carol Reed also beat Stanley Kubrick in the Best Director category, meaning the only award Kubrick, or 2001 went home with was a Best Visual Effects one.
