8: Francis Ford Coppola fails to win best director for The Godfather

Godfather

Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is widely considered as one of the best films ever made and with good reason. The epic story of a mob family is as raw and powerful today as it was upon its initial release back in 1972.

Whilst the Academy did rightfully award it the best picture prize, Coppola lost out to Bob Fosse, director of the musical Cabaret. No disrespect to Cabaret, which is a serviceable and entertaining film but it is not in the same league as The Godfather, as time has shown.

The Academy did redeem itself a little by awarding him with the award two years later for the sequel, The Godfather:Part 2, but this still remains one of the strangest decision they ever made.
