9: Pulp Fiction loses to Forrest Gump

The term Oscar bait was practically invented for Forrest Gump. Whilst it’s difficult to argue that the film isn’t enjoyable it is undeniably over sentimental and manipulative; an over the top story of the every day man changing the world for the better.

Held in comparison with Quentin Tarantino’s groundbreaking Pulp Fiction it really doesn’t feel fit to shine its shoes. But that isn’t what the Academy thought back in 1994 when Robert Zemeckis’ film walked away with the much coveted statuette.

Pulp Fiction may have proved too experimental for the Academy’s taste, but let’s not forget that wasn’t the only film that Forrest Gump beat that year- with the IMDB’s highest rated movie The Shawshank Redemption also being in that category.
