4: Citizen Kane takes home one award

021 Citizen Kane 1941

Citizen Kane is considered by film experts around the world as the greatest movie ever made. It changed the way people look at cinema and give us some of the most iconic moments ever put on the big screen.

The Academy however, in their infinite wisdom decided to ignore all of that back in 1942 when the film, despite being nominated in nine categories included Best Picture, only took home Best Original Screenplay. With the top prize instead going to John Ford’s rather forgettable How Green Was My Valley.

Politics may well have played a part in this- newspaper giant William Randolph Hearst, on whom the Kane is based didn’t take to the film too much and the movie was famously booed the whole awards ceremony.
