Alfred Hitchcock, considered by many as the greatest director who ever lived was nominated a total of five times for the Best Director prize by the Academy Awards, but failed to win one of them.

Hitchcock did win a Best Picture prize for Rebecca in 1940 but that was as good as it got for the man who created some of the greatest movies ever made. Several of his other films were nominated for best picture but it was only Rebecca, one of his lesser known works that ever took home the prize.
