A highlight of the annual Tribeca Film Festival is getting to witness in-depth on stage conversations with some of film’s most significant figures.

The 2019 Tribeca Talks lineup includes the likes of Queen Latifah, Dee Rees, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Guillermo del Toro, David O. Russell, Jennifer Lawrence, Sarah Silverman, Michael J. Fox, Rashida Jones and Irwin Winkler. There will also be a sound design masterclass and a discussion with boundary-pushing video game creator Hideo Kojima.

TRIBECA TALKS: DIRECTORS SERIES

Martin Scorsese with Robert De Niro

Celebrated Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese is responsible for some of cinema’s most highly regarded works including Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Goodfellas and Casino. Ahead of his latest film The Irishman which will be released by Netflix later this year, Scorsese will sit down with Irishman star, his frequent collaborator and Tribeca co-founder Robert De Niro.

De Niro first worked with the acclaimed director on 1973’s Mean Streets, going on to win an Oscar for his performance as Jake LaMotta in Scorsese’s Raging Bull, released in US cinemas in December 1980. In addition to his narrative feature films, Scorsese has enjoyed success as a documentary filmmaker including the award winning films No Direction Home: Bob Dylan and George Harrison: Living in the Material World. His work on television includes a Directors Guild win for the pilot episode of the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, a series which he executive produced.

Visionary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro will take to the Tribeca Talks stage to discuss his discuss his creative process throughout his career from the Oscar-winning Pan’s Labyrinth to his more recent Best Picture and Best Director winning The Shape of Water. His prolific work as director also includes Cronos, Mimic, The Devil’s Backbone, Blade II, Hellboy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Pacific Rim and Crimson Peak.

David O Russell
‘A Star is Born’ film premiere, Arrivals, Los Angeles, USA – 24 Sep 2018

David O. Russell with Jennifer Lawrence

Acclaimed filmmaker David O. Russell will take to the stage to discuss his Oscar and Golden Globe winning feature films including The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle. He’ll be joined for a one-on-one conversation by his frequent collaborator Jennifer Lawrence, whom he directed to three Golden Globe wins and three of her four Oscar nominations, including a win for Best Actress in Silver Linings Playbook.

TRIBECA TALKS: STORYTELLERS

Michael J. Fox with Denis Leary

The Back to the Future trilogy legend and New York Times bestselling author Michael J. Fox has been nominated for ten Golden Globes, winning four. His acting work has also garnered Grammy, SAG and Emmy recognition. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at 29, Fox established the The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. He will joined on stage by his friend and Rescue Me creator Denis Leary to discuss Fox’s career highlights.

Sarah Silverman with Mike Birbiglia

Emmy winning comedian, actress, writer and producer Sarah Silverman’s credits include the the Hulu series I Love You, America and the movies I Smile Back, Battle of the Sexes and Wreck It Ralph. She will be joined on stage by fellow comedian Mike Birbiglia, the writer, director and star of the films Sleepwalk with Me and Don’t Think Twice to discuss their creative processes.

Rashida Jones

Parks and Recreation star and filmmaker Rashida Jones will discuss her career, including 2012’s Celeste and Jesse Forever which she co-wrote and starred in and last year’s Quincy documentary which she directed, about her father music legend Quincy Jones.

TRIBECA TALKS: MASTER CLASSES

The Art of Cinematic Sound

Following the world premiere screening of a new documentary by Midge Costin Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound will have its world premiere at Tribeca on 29th April. Following the screening there will be master class conversation examining their craft with three of the industry’s most celebrated sound designers and editors, Oscar-winners Walter Murch, Ben Burtt and Gary Rydstrom. Credited with coining the term ‘sound designer’, Murch has created soundscapes for revered classics including The Conversation, The Godfather, The English Patient and Apocalypse Now. Burtt’s Oscar-winning work has taken him to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars and he’s helped create cinematic magic with Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Rydstrom has created impressive sound designs for some of the most popular films in movie history such as Jurassic Park, Toy Story, Titanic, and Saving Private Ryan.

Irwin Winkler on the Art and Craft of Producing

With a career spanning over five decades, Oscar-winning producer and director Irwin Winkler will discuss his five decades at one of the industry’s foremost figures with a list of producing credits that includes Rocky, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Wolf of Wall Street and the upcoming The Irishman.

In what promises to be a fascinating discussion the multi award winning Queen Latifah will be joined on the Tribeca Talks stage by the trailblazing Oscar-nominated filmmaker Dee Rees. Rees directed Latifah to one of her SAG award wins for her role in the HBO film Bessie. Latifah will discuss her multifaceted career as musician, actor, label president, author and entrepreneur as well as how she is using her influence to mentor and uplift diverse female filmmakers to help accelerate gender and racial equality behind the camera. The talk will be followed by the debut of The Queen Collective short documentaries, as part of a program developed by Queen Latifah, created by diverse young women.

TRIBECA GAMES PRESENTS: HIDEO KOJIMA WITH NORMAN REEDUS


To discuss his boundary-pushing new PlayStation4 game, Death Stranding, creator Hideo Kojima will be joined by the game’s star, Norman Reedus, best known for his star-turning performances in The Boondock Saints and the acclaimed series The Walking Dead.
