Pretty much nothing is known about the 2015 blockbuster. But Whedon has recently confirmed that the brother-sister team of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will be in the movie. And now Deadline report that Marvel are reportedly eyeing Aaron Taylor-Johnson for the role.
We are of course expecting the entirety of the original team to return, which we’re all hoping will include Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark / Iron Man, alongside Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and Jeremy Renner.
And I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Clark Gregg to reprise his role as Phil Coulson in the sequel, along with leading Marvel and Whedon’s upcoming Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series.
Taylor-Johnson has been on the rise nicely in recent years, making a huge name for himself as the titular character in Kick-Ass back in 2010. He is of course reprising the role for the sequel this summer in Kick-Ass 2, and has another huge blockbuster coming our way next summer in Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla.
His involvement with The Avengers 2 is reportedly still early, and the report notes that he has some scheduling conflicts which could get in the way of him signing on. With Godzilla due out in May 2014, those conflicts presumably revolve around promoting the movie next spring/summer.
From the original source material, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are twins, son and daughter to Magneto. Quicksilver is capable of both moving and thinking at superhuman speeds, and Scarlet Witch is able to use ‘hexes’ to manipulate probability and alter reality in various ways.
Interestingly, Bryan Singer recently announced that he’d cast the role of Quicksilver in his 2014 blockbuster, X-Men: Days of Future Past, which means that we could well have two franchises at two different studios using the same character simultaneously. And there aren’t any other times, at least major, that that has happened that immediately come to mind.
The Avengers 2 is set to be released on May 1st, 2015, following on from Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Guardians of the Galaxy, all coming our way between now and then.
