Sicario was incredible, but it’s fair to say that just about everyone was confused when talk of a sequel first surfaced. Believe it or not though, it’s happening, and while it would be easy to throw shade at what seems like an unnecessary follow-up, Lionsgate’s plans are…intriguing!

While Green Room helmer Jeremy Saulnier was originally the frontrunner to take over from Denis Villenueve (who it was initially hoped would return, but is now too busy with Blade Runner 2), Italian director Stefano Sollima now looks set to be the one who will take over. The Sicario follow-up also has a title: Soldado, the Spanish word for “soldier.”

The plan is for this movie to revolve around the character played by Benicio Del Toro, while Josh Brolin is also set to reprise his role as the CIA agent who is fighting back (not necessarily in the most legal of ways) against the Mexican drug cartels flooding the US.

However, one person we now know won’t return is Emily Blunt. That’s a shame, but makes sense when you consider the fact that it felt like her story was wrapped up well in Sicario.

A release date for Soldado has yet to be revealed, but more details will likely follow soon!
