Searching for Sugarman PosterAs one of the most eagerly anticipated documentaries of the year prepares for its nationwide release on July 26th – HeyUGuys’ Stefan Pape was fortunate enough to catch up with the director of the feature Malik Bendjelloul, and the subject himself; Rodriguez.

Searching for Sugar Man depicts the extraordinary tale of Rodriguez, a forgotten musician from the 1970’s, who although disappearing into obscurity, remained a household name in South Africa, yet the twist to this tale, is that he had absolutely no idea. Bendjelloul has therefore tracked down two South African fans who seek in finding the disregarded musician, someone they had believed to be dead.*

Inadvertently providing Rodriguez with the success he’s always deserved, Searching for Sugar Man is a wonderful film and one not to be missed – and the pair discuss their surprise at the acclaim of which their film has achieved thus far, whilst Rodriguez let’s us into his future plans, as the 70-year-old has his heart set on new material and, hopefully, a tour…
