It was recently revealed that a remake of Road House is in the works, with UFC fighter Ronda Rousey set to take over the role made famous by Patrick Swayze in the ’80 action classic.

Now, the movie has taken a step closer to becoming a reality as Nick Cassavetes has signed on to write and direct this new take on the property. Rousey meanwhile has also been confirmed as starring and producing, and the plan is for the fast-tracked shoot to begin early next year following the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion’s next fight in November.

Cassavetes has an interesting CV after directing male focused films like Alpha Dog and John Q, but also writing strong roles for woman in the likes of The Notebook and The Other Woman. It was that latter skill which apparently played a big role in him landing Road House.

In Road House, the late Patrick Swayze played a bouncer hired to clean up one of Missouri’s rowdiest, loudest bars, The Double Deuce. He then finds himself roped into taking on one of the town’s corrupt businessman, and the movie has since become a huge cult hit and one of Swayze’s most iconic and fondly remembered roles. This will mark Rousey’s biggest role to date following brief appearances in The Expendables 3 and Furious 7.

Rumour has it that Rousey will compete at next year’s WrestleMania as she’s a huge WWE fan. For more on the history of wrestlers in film, be sure to click here for out in-depth guide!
