After enjoying the first two REC films from Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró I was intrigued to learn of their plans for the beginning and the end of the franchise.

Splitting the following two films, REC 3: Genesis and REC 4: Apocalypse, between themselves seemed like a good move, and one which will ensure the series will retain the disquieting tone it began with. What we have today is a first look trailer at Paco Plaza’s film REC 3, and while we knew it was supposed to show another side of the outbreak few would have guessed it would begin with the happiest day of someone’s life.

While the first two REC films contained the action to a darkened apartment building Genesis takes us further afield to a wedding which is happening as the outbreak occurs and, as we see, begins to spread. The trailer cleverly lulls us into thinking that the wedding video will serve as a continuation of the ‘handheld horror’ conventions but as things begin to go wrong we see that at some point Paco Plaza decides to shoot the film conventionally.

This could be a bold and necessary move, or it may strip the film from a connection to its predecessors, and quite where it leaves Plaza’s REC 1 & 2 co-director’s REC 4: Apocalypse is anybody’s guess, but from the snippets we see here there looks to be plenty left in this series to stir the blood.

Here’s the trailer, which has no subtitles but there’s no real chance you’ll misunderstand what’s going on…
