Over the fifteen years that Pixar have been making animation films, they’ve managed to conquer the market with their unique, funny, poignant and touching tales.

They are currently an animation force to be reckoned with and it comes as no surprise (though it may add weight to Pixar’s critics, given the number of sequels the studio are developing, not to mention 3D re-releases) that they are planning on capatilising on the direct-to-DVD market Disney have been establishing for some years.

News has reached Movieline that Pixar are planning on releasing a spin-off from their Cars film, entitled Planes. The only difference is the film will bypass cinemas, opting instead for a full DVD / Blu-ray release.

It’ll be interesting to see whether Planes is a success, or whether it is overlooked, as most films that are released straight-to-DVD do so with a stigma of lower quality, but this is Pixar – and Toy Story 2 was originally planned to bypass the cinemas, so we shall see.
