They’re the mis-matched cops who grapple with the toughest of cases and the complexities of policing modern Britain – and they’re back for a second series. Criminal Record, which saw Apple TV bring together the enigmatic DCI Daniel Hegarty (former Doctor Who Peter Capaldi) and the ambitious but more idealistic DS June Lenker (The Good Fight’s Cush Jumbo) to solve a miscarriage of justice, returns for a second season and the stakes are even higher.

Season one, which ran in 2024, saw them cross paths when an anonymous call resurrects an old murder case, with the savvy and often secretive Hegarty clearly following his own agenda and Lenker unable to fathom where his loyalties really lie. Politics are introduced into the mix for the latest outing, which debuts this week, as the pair are reunited to investigate a suspicious death at a demonstration. There’s been a slight shift in Hegarty and Lenker’s relationship: he’s come to realise that she can be trusted, while she’s still cautious in her dealings with him. And it’s a story with its finger firmly on the pulse.

In the exclusive interviews below, Capaldi and Jumbo talk about creating the tension between their two characters by keeping rehearsal to the bare minimum – “It was completely spontaneous.” – as well as the appeal of bringing back Hegarty and Lenker. Executive producer Elaine Collins (TV’s Vera and Shetland), who is married to Capaldi, explains how they combine working together with family life and her own interest in crime drama. And Jumbo tells the story behind the close cropped hair which has become her trademark – and how it’s associated with the show.
