With the world and its dog lining up to enjoy Spider-Man’s spirited homecoming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems Marvel are looking forward to the arrival of another new hero: Captain Marvel. Following her dalliance on Skull Island, Brie Larson will step into the suit for the film, which is due to be released on the 7th of March, 2019. Today we have news that one of old guard of the Avengers collective looks likely to join her – Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.

Deadline appear to confirm the rumours which have been filling the nooks and crannies of the internet’s rumour mill for some time. It’s a fine time to reintroduce one of the most recognisable faces in the long-running film series. Fury has been absent from the big screen since his Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, having had a rough time of it in Captain America: The Winter Solder.

Captain Marvel will introduce a new hero to the universe just as the original big screen heroes bow out. The second Avengers Infinity War film is set to be released just after Captain Marvel’s film, so it can be intuited that events in both films will dovetail as we bid farewell to Thor, Iron Man and the rest of the crew.

The film is being directed by long-time collaborators Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, whose previous films include Half Nelson & Mississippi Grind. They follow the likes of James Gunn, Anthony and Joe Russo and Taika Waititi in bringing their own independent sensibilities to modern blockbuster cinema. It should provide a fecund foundation for Nick Fury to make his return.
