The Bourne Legacy sequel starring Jeremy Renner has been put on hold ever since a Matt Damon/Paul Greengrass collaboration was confirmed, with director Justin Lin moving on to the third Star Trek movie.

So, goodbye (and good riddance) Aaron Cross and hello again Jason Bourne! It has been confirmed today that the “Untitled Next Bourne Chapter” will be released on July 29th, 2016, the release date originally held by the third Planet of the Apes movie. However, there have been some key changes behind the scenes.

The movie will be the first in the franchise not to have Tony Gilroy involved in writing duties, something which is perhaps no great surprise after the tepid reaction to The Bourne Legacy. Oh, and don’t forget the fact that Matt Damon described his Bourne Ultimatum script as “unreadable”, “terrible”, and “embarrassing.”

Instead, Damon, Greengrass and Christopher Rouse will be writing. This is a first for the latter, but he’s worked closely with the director as an editor on all of his movies since The Bourne Ultimatum.

For years, both Damon and Greengrass refused to commit to another Bourne movie, so the fact that it’s now 100% officially happening is obviously extremely exciting. Stay tuned to HeyUGuys for more as it develops!
