Apple Original Films has unveiled the trailer for ‘Being Heumann,’ the powerful new drama from Academy Award-winning writer, director and producer Siân Heder (CODA), telling the extraordinary true story of disability rights activist Judy Heumann and a landmark act of resistance that helped change millions of lives.
The trailer arrives ahead of the film’s Gala presentation at the BFI London Film Festival, following its opening night premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
“They wouldn’t take Judy Heumann’s phone calls, so she took their building” sets the tone for a story of determination, rebellion and a fight for equal rights. Set in 1977, ‘Being Heumann’ follows a young disabled woman, played by Ruth Madeley, and a determined coalition of outsiders who refuse to accept a system that has repeatedly ignored them.
When their attempts to secure action from the government fall on deaf ears, what begins as an impulsive act of defiance transforms into the longest occupation of a federal building in American history. Hundreds of activists seize government offices in San Francisco and refuse to leave until the bureaucrat standing in their way, played by Mark Ruffalo, takes action.
As the occupation unfolds, the unlikely leaders of a growing movement must find their way forward in a world that has never been built to accommodate them. Blending irreverence with a deeply human story of solidarity and resistance, the film explores how ordinary people can unite to challenge institutional barriers and fight for fundamental rights.
Heder writes, directs and produces the film, co-writing the screenplay with Rebekah Taussig.
