With Idris Elba’s return as ‘Luther’ for a fifth season looming imminently, the BBC has made available a two-minute preview clip of just how bad things are turning out for our grumpy detective. Spoilers obviously follow.

Elba reprises his role in the four-episode series. Ruth Wilson will also be returning even though she was meant to be killed off in season 4. Wunmi Mosaku joins the cast as new recruit DS Catherine Halliday and ‘Cold Feet’ star Hermione Norris will play a psychiatrist named Dr Vivien Lake who is called on to help Luther get to the bottom of a swathe of brutal murders. Showrunner, Neil Cross also returns and ‘The Alienist’ and ‘White Princess’  Jamie Payne will direct.

As for what else we can expect from the new series is anyone’s guess at this point but the new preview certainly lives you salivating for some more. Luther, yet again, has his work cut out for himself.

According to the BBC, series five will see London “give birth to a new nightmare” that will see our hero forced to “confront the depths of human depravity”.

Luther will be joining forces with DS Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku) to investigate a series of “monstrous killings”.
