Well, this makes sense. Legendary Pictures has been developing a live-action Hot Wheels movie for some time now, but they’ve finally found the perfect choice of director in the form of Justin Lin. He most recently directed Star Trek Beyond, but before that, he reinvigorated the Fast and Furious franchise and helped turn it into the box office juggernaut it is today.

The filmmaker will develop, direct, and produce the movie, and this marks the first significant step forward for Hot Wheels in quite some time. McG was attached to direct at one point, as was Simon Crane back in 2013. The project has been in limbo since 2014.

The hunt for a writer has now begun, but the project is still in the early enough stages that it won’t be Lin’s next project. What will be isn’t clear, though it’s thought that the director is going to end up directing the next Star Trek movie. A release date has not been announced yet, though Hot Wheels is one of a number of projects Mattel has in the works in Hollywood. Max Steel is on the way, and Masters of the Universe and Barbie are also being developed.

Despite the popularity of video games, Hot Wheels remains one of the world’s biggest toy brands, with Mattel claiming that they create nine million cars a week and sell ten every second. If that’s the case, then expect the big screen adaptation to be a massive hit!
