Every year, there are rumours about The Doctor’s companion departing the BBC series, and so it didn’t come as too much of a surprise earlier this week when there were once again reports that Jenna Coleman’s time on Doctor Who will be coming to an end later this year. Though most dismissed those at the time, it has now been confirmed that she’s leaving.

Talking on Nick Grimshaw on his Radio 1 breakfast show this morning, the actress revealed:

“I have left the Tardis, it’s happened already, I’ve filmed my last scenes,” before going on to confirm that her departure had, “been in the works for a very long time. Stephen (Moffat) and I sat down a year ago and tried to work out the best place to do it and the best place to tell a really good story,” Coleman continued, “so hopefully that’s what we’ve done. We sat down last year and worked a really good story arc out so hopefully people will love it.”

It seems like one of the main reasons for her departure is the fact that she’ll next star in an eight part ITV drama in which she’ll play a young Queen Victoria. It’s set to air next year and will cover the story of the monarch who Coleman describes as, “a vivid, strong, inspirational and utterly fascinating woman in British history and I can’t wait to tell her story.”

Doctor Who assistant Clara Oswald is sure to be missed from the series moving forwards, but who ends up replacing her is no doubt going to set the internet abuzz this Autumn…
