As the DC cinematic universe continues to expand and find a tone which brings out the very best of its pantheon of characters, details are emerging about future chapters in the saga.

One of the most intriguing of the new heroes on the horizon is Aquaman. We have seen Jason Momoa in his guise as salty behemoth Aquaman in the recently released Justice League tease. Then we saw Amber Heard’s first picture as Mera, and we had our first look at the wider Aquaworld.

Aquaman director James Wan has now opened up on what kind of film he’s looking to make. Given the cool reaction to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the off-kilter Suicide Squad movie, the direction seems to be clear.

“The spirit that I’m going for is like a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story,” Wan told ET. “It’s ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone.”

The director went on to champion Momoa and Heard in the forthcoming Justice League movie, which is due in cinemas a little over a year from now. “I think Amber and Jason Momoa, in their moments in Justice League, [are] going to give the rest of the world a flavor of what their own standalone movie could be.”

We’ll find out in 2018 exactly what kind of buckles will be swashed ashore with Aquaman’s solo outing.
