Video game adaptations are almost always terrible, but upcoming releases like Assassin’s Creed and Duncan Jones’ Warcraft look set to finally buck the trend, potentially making this genre as popular and successful as the superhero one if they end up actually being good.

Based on this first official image of Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch, that looks to be the case. Wait, who? Even if you’ve played all of the popular Assassin’s Creed games, that name won’t be familiar to you, and that’s because he’s a character created specifically for the film.

Seeing as how each instalment of the series focuses on a different assassin, that’s really no big deal. In fact, Yahoo Movies reveals that, “Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.”

The movie will be set in the same world as the game, but just how closely tied to them it will be remains to be seen. Assassin’s Creed also stars Marion Cotillard, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Ariane Labed, and is currently set to be released on December 21st, 2016.
