9. HFR

Peter Jackson

48FPS/HFR didn’t take off the way everyone expected, with many critics tearing the experimental new format apart following the first screenings of An Unexpected Journey. To some it made the movie look better, while others felt like what they were watching had been sped up.

It may take some getting used too, but HFR still feels like it could be the future of cinema, with The Hobbit simply the testing ground. Imagining what something like The Avengers or the new Star Wars (picture the space battles!) would look like in the higher frame rate makes the mind boggle, and with James Cameron looking to embrace the format for his Avatar sequels, here’s hoping it takes off soon and Peter Jackson gets the appropriate credit.
