Michael Bay has made the cinematic Transformers saga something of a personal project, with the fifth films featuring Optimus Prime and the gang acting as a swansong for the director’s tenure with Hasbro’s robot collective.
Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci are back for The Last Knight, reprising their roles from 2014’s Age of Extinction. They will be joined by series regulars Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro. Laura Haddock, Isabela Moner and Jerrod Carmichael are newcomers to the series, along with someone called Anthony Hopkins.
It is no surprise that Paramount are looking to avoid taking their cash cow out to pasture, and are following the route Disney are taking with Star Wars and having a number of spin offs. The first is set to land in 2018 featuring everyone’s favourite
The first full trailer for the latest Transformers film has arrived, and in it we get a good look at what Wahlberg and Co. are up against. It features Dead planets, buried treasure of a kind, and much of the camera in the blender chaos we’ve come to know and endure over the last decade. Peter Cullen’s broad, paternal delivery is a neat hit for fans who dig the nostalgia factor and there’s a whole cartoonish feeling to the proceedings which are a little endearing.
What will become of the Transformers once Bay departs for IPs new? Who knows. There’s something wearing about the inevitable rumble of the heavy metal onslaught every couple of years. The universe is not wide enough, nor has it been expanding sufficiently in the films thus far, Perhaps the spin offs will give this series the WD-40 treatment? Or is this really the last night for Optimus and his pals?
