Callum Scott Howells has spoken to HeyUGuys about stepping into the extravagant world of Madfabulous, where he takes on the role of Henry Paget, one of Britain’s most flamboyant and fascinating aristocrats. The actor revealed that director Celyn Jones personally sent him the script and encouraged him to explore the story of Paget, a historical figure Howells admits he knew little about beforehand. After researching the eccentric nobleman’s life, he quickly became captivated by both the man and the opportunity to bring his remarkable story to the screen.

While preparing for the role, Howells discovered that much of Paget’s personal life remains a mystery, forcing him to fill in the gaps through extensive research and collaboration with writer Lisa Baker. What struck him most was the contradiction at the heart of the man: despite the controversies and financial ruin that followed him, Paget remained deeply loved by many who knew him. For Howells, that warmth and enduring popularity made him an irresistible character to explore.

The actor approached Paget as a figure far ahead of his time, comparing him to a rock star in the mould of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust. He wanted the character to carry himself with confidence and charisma, while also exploring the emotional vulnerabilities hidden beneath the extravagant costumes and theatrical lifestyle. Howells was particularly interested in the impact of Paget’s family relationships and personal losses, which helped him create a more layered and human portrayal.

Howells also reflected on sharing the screen with Rupert Everett, describing the experience as both inspiring and educational. Looking ahead, the actor remains open to reuniting with Russell T Davies, whose acclaimed series It’s a Sin proved to be his breakout role. While there are no current plans, Howells was full of praise for Davies, calling him one of the finest writers working today.
