If you thought you were safe from a The Croods sequel after Universal Pictures and Dreamworks gave up on the idea, you’d be wrong. The two studios have now decided to go back to the picture and give it another shot, setting a release date of September 18th, 2020.

The 2013 animation followed the Prehistoric family the Croods who lived in a particularly dangerous moment in time. Patriarch Grug (Nicolas Cage), his mate, Ugga (Catherine Keener), teenage daughter Eep (Emma Stone), son Thunk (Clark Duke) and feisty Gran (Cloris Leachman) gather food by day and huddle together in a cave at night. When a more evolved caveman named Guy (Ryan Reynolds) arrives on the scene, Grug is distrustful, but it soon becomes apparent that Guy is correct about the impending destruction of their world.

The Croods Sequel

The cast of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman and Clark Duke are all set to make a return as well as a new voice in Leslie Mann to take on a new Crood adventure as they face their biggest threat since leaving the cave: another family.

The sequel was originally slated for a release in 2017 but was back to 2018 through a deal done between Fox and Dreamworks Animation, but due to Universal’s acquisition of DWA in 2016, the production was shut down amid layoffs at the animation house.

The Oscar and Golden Globe nominated animation was the eleventh highest-grossing film of 2013 and fourth highest-grossing animated feature in 2013 behind the likes of Frozen, Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University.
