We reported here yesterday on the list of potential directors that Christopher Nolan is looking at for the forthcoming Superman reboot. All of them are interesting possibilities in their own way and now a couple of them have spoken about their names appearing on The List.

First of all, JoBlo grabbed a few words with Matt Reeves, who launched himself into the stratosphere with Cloverfield and is now garnering significant advance word of mouth for Let Me In, his excellent looking remake of Swedish cult success Let The Right One In. Saying that he was surprised that he was on the list, having only heard so when a fan at Fantastic Fest told him, Reeves added:-

“I really have no idea if any of that is true. It’s certainly an amazing project, but I would be surprised…”

Pretty non-committal, but not necessarily closing the door on any possibility. Duncan Jones, director of the superb low-budget sci-fi “Moon”, was a little less ambiguous when tweeting about the project:-

“About Superman… I’m going to say something really cheesy; Can’t talk about it, but an honor to be on the list. Interesting times!”

Finally, we have Zack Snyder, who after Dawn of the Dead, 300 and Watchmen, would clearly know how to handle the technical demands of the project, but nonetheless felt a little ambivalent when asked a couple of years ago by USA Today:-

“They asked me to direct a Superman movie, and I said no,” was Snyder’s response more than two years ago, “He’s a tricky one nowadays, isn’t he? He’s the king daddy of all comic-book heroes, but I’m just not sure how you sell that kind of earnestness to a sophisticated audience anymore.”
So, we have a mixture there, but thankfully it is all starting to feel like a win-win situation.
Nolan as producer is a faultless decision and his shortlist of directors appears to contain no weak links. Snyder has a point in so far as the tone of Superman is a difficult one to nail now that comic-book adaps have gone all dark and broody, but this should still be an exciting project once it gets off the ground.
Apparently a release date in 2012 is wanted by the studio, so a decision should be made soon.
Thanks to Comingsoon for piecing all of this together.

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
