Star-TrekJ.J. Abrams will return to the big screen next year to bring us Star Trek Into Darkness, the highly anticipated sequel to his 2009 reboot of the Star Trek franchise.

Like everything Abrams does, the film has been shrouded in secrecy – from the three-frame first clip we saw last month, to the identity of the villain. But now, the mystery has been lifted ever so slightly, with the release of the official synopsis.

“In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.”

We still don’t know the identity of the villain, but I personally think some things are best kept secret until the lights go down in the cinema.

The cast is expectedly brilliant, headed up by Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve, and Noel Clarke.

And Abrams is directing from a script penned by co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Transformers) and Damon Lindelof (Prometheus).

Star Trek Into Darkness will be arriving in theatres on 17th May, 2013, and given that part of the film is thought to have been shot using IMAX cameras, odds are good that we can look forward to an IMAX release, too. Here’s to hoping we might see some more snippets of footage before the year’s end.
